The Schneider CA1 was the first French tank, developed during the First World War. It weighed 13.5 tonnes, had a 60hp engine, a top speed of around 3 ¾ mph, and could cross a 1.5m wide trench. It had minimal suspension, and was hot, dark & noisy inside - factors which, along with the exhaust, cordite and petrol fumes made conditions for the crew almost unbearable.
