Prince Andrew says he’s giving up his Duke of York title as Epstein allegations refuse to fade
LONDON (AP) — Prince Andrew said Friday he is giving up his royal title of the Duke of York after his friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein returned to the headlines.
The royal’s fall from grace began nearly six years ago with a calamitous BBC television interview about his ties to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It’s the latest fall from grace for the 65-year-old prince, who had already stepped down from public life in 2019 over his links to Epstein.
The King's brother said that "the continued accusations about me" were distracting from the work of the Royal Family.
Carpenter also notes that the removal of Andrew's title is "largely symbolic" since "removing his dukedom officially would legally require an act of Parliament and would be more complex than this immediate action. For Andrew to be legally stripped of his dukedom before his death, it would require statutory action—a vote by Parliament."
