One neighbor said he called police around midnight because he saw the fireworks shooting into backyards on Lincoln Street in South Ozone Park.

A lieutenant with the Springfield Township Fire Department was killed Sunday morning in an explosion outside his home, officials said.

Fire Rescue crews arrived to find a fire in the attic and heavy smoke on the west side of the building. Everyone was outside the home when crews arrived.
