Winter storm 'Fern' is about to ruin a lot of weekend plans, but it turns out the name isn't official at all. The Weather Channel decided to start naming blizzards in 2012 — and we're all for it.
A massive storm system is headed towards the US and could impact Texas, Oklahoma, Washington DC, New York, Boston, and parts of Minnesota and South Dakota.
Hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30, and so far this year there have been 13 named storms, beginning with Tropical Storm Andrea in June and, most recently, Hurricane Melissa, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Hurricanes have had names since the 1950s, but what about winter storms? Though a name is likely to be thrown around this weekend as a widespread winter storm brings heavy snow to central and eastern United States,
