Mexico has started a public consultation process to gather information on the functioning of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA), the government's official gazette said on Wednesday.

This is the first official step in launching a review of the USMCA, which replaced the North American free-trade agreement, or NAFTA, in 2020.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney dropped down to Mexico Thursday to meet with that country’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and form a united front, as the two major trade partners prepare for the renegotiation of the U.

The Canadian government said on Friday that it had started a public consultation process to gather views on the operations of the U.S.-Canada-Mexico trade agreement, ahead of the first joint review of the pact in 2026.

Canada on Friday launched public consultations on the scheduled review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, but the priority remains obtaining relief from U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and lumber, federal minister Dominic LeBlanc said.

The U.S. Trade Representative filed a notice in the federal register on September 16, seeking public comments as a precursor to the formal evaluation set to begin next year.
