Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz has the latest tracking.
The NWS Newport/Morehead City NC issued a severe thunderstorm watch at 6:51 p.m. on Tuesday in effect until Wednesday at 1 a.m. The watch is for Duplin, Greene, Lenoir, Martin and Pitt counties.
"We could certainly use the rain. We just don't want a ton all at once to cause flash flooding," NWS meteorologist Joseph Nield said.
The Chicago area has already seen watches and warnings posted for severe weather Monday, with more possible. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Lake, DuPage, Cook, Will and Kankakee counties in Illinois,
The National Weather Service issued a cascade of flash flood warnings, flood advisories and flood watches across New Jersey on Monday night, as severe thunderstorms pushed heavy rainfall through the state from its northeastern counties to its southern reaches.
