China fires test missile into Pacific Ocean

China's military test-launched a long-range ballistic missile from a nuclear-powered submarine in the South Pacific, drawing protest and concern from countries in the region.
Some countries in the region were quick to criticize the launch, which China sought to play down.
China's first such test since 2024 took place amid warnings from Australia and New Zealand.
Although the Pentagon estimates that China’s nuclear-missile subs have been patrolling at sea for about a decade, the Chinese government has never confirmed that. So its announcement on July 6th that one of them had carried out a rare test of a ballistic missile in the Pacific Ocean both surprised and unnerved many across the region.
